Choosing food staples for your family is based on personal preferences, storage and budget. Here is a list of a few items that can be useful:
- Baking: baking soda and powder, sugar, flour (unbleached and whole wheat), yeast (dry-active), wheat bran, cornmeal, evaporated canned milk and skim milk powder
Canned goods: beans and lentils, pasta sauces, vegetables (i.e. tomatoes, corn), fish (i.e. tuna and salmon), and soups.
- Cereals: family favourites, bran, whole grain varieties, quick cooking rolled oats for oatmeal.
- Fresh vegetables: onions, sweet potatoes and potatoes (store in a cool, dry place).
- Grain products: bread, crackers, a variety of pastas including ready-to-bake lasagna noodles, rice (i.e. quick-cooking, long-grain, wild rice and flavoured rice) and bread crumbs.
- Oils: canola oil, olive oil
- Snacks: nuts and seeds, dried fruit (raisins, cranberries, figs, dates), canned fruit, granola bars, etc.
- Spices and condiments: salt, pepper, garlic, oregano, basil and other spices you typically use. Also ketchup, mustard, relish (all must be refrigerated after opening), vinegar, soy sauce, honey and bouillon cubes or powder (vegetable, beef and chicken).
